The Essen Spielmesse was held this last
weekend, it is the worlds largest convention for board and card games.
Every year the convention draws over 150,000 gamers and reporters from
around the world to play, demo, buy, sell and overall immerse themselves
in the world of tabletop gaming. I, along with my colleague Johan from
our Malmö butik were on the scene and I want to share with you a few of
my Highlights as well as upcoming games I was happy to demo.
The Magic The Gathering Strategy Board Game
was announced at the fair on the very first day and was available to
demo in a prototype form. When I heard it was being demoed I made it a
priority to get a game in. To best describe the game play I would say
its like Wizard's previous HeroScape and Dungeon Command with a bit of
Magic spell play thrown in for good measure. Each player takes a
Planeswalker and summons squads specific to their faction, they also
have a hand of cards that they may cast to manipulate things. Players of
Magic will be very familiar with the cards and abilities as many of
them were adapted from the card game to fit this new style of game. I
loved the game, even though the rules and abilites were obviously still
in development and not playtest well yet. The game is set to release at
GenCon 2015, and I can't wait.
Star Realms is a small deckbuilding card game from
White Wizard Games. If you've ever play a game like Dominion then you
will know the rules and game play right away. This was a game that Johan
and I heard about due to the buzz it generated at GenCon back in
August. When we stumbled on the booth we knew we had to get a demo in.
After a few turns we knew that this was a spectacular game. It's a
simple and elegant little card game and a great introduction to the
deckbuilding genre. I guarantee you we will get this in as soon as we
can and demos when we can in the Stockholm butik.
Warhammer 40,000: Conquest is the most recent LCG
from FFG and the latest game by Eric Lang. After my first play I am
convinced Eric Lang is a master designer. Here he offers familiar
mechanics fine tuned and offered in an amazing presentation and perfect
use of mechanics and theme. Johan brought his personal copy to play
during down time or off hours this weekend, and I'm so very glad he did
because it was sheer brilliant.
The Battle at Kemble's Cascade sold out on the very
first day of the convention. Before going to the convention this was on
my MUST play list because of the theme. The game adapts classic arcade
space shooters, if you've ever played Galaga, R-Type, Gradius, or even
Space Invaders then this game will tug at your nostalgic heart strings.
Players play as space pilots and you simply shoot other ships and
aliens, each turn the bottom row “scrolls” and is removed and a top row
is added, after a number of rows a final level boss is added and players
compete to shoot the boss down. Every time Johan and I walked by the
Z-Man Games booth in hopes of a demo it was always full with no sign of
it being free. But fate was on our side as on Saturday night we went to a
game night at a hotel and both the designers were there and gladly gave
us a personal demo of the game.
Johan and I played many many game at Essen this
year, and we hope to have some of them in the store as soon as we can.
Until then, game on.
